IgottoknowhimpersonallylastsemesterwhenhewastakingthecourseofSpecialTopicsonInternationalFinancethatIwasteaching.Intheclass,heshowedgreatinterestineconomics.Hestudiedconscientiouslyandoftentalkedwithmeaftertheclassaboutthequestionsthathehadcomeacrossinhisreadings.Oncewhenwetalkedaboutthecountrysongoingrestructuringofitstaxsystem,hedelvedintotheincreasingcostoftaxevasion.Wethendiscussedseveralmethodsofcalculatingthecost.Aswetalked,Ifoundthathewasveryskilledinexpressinghisideasthroughdiagrammaticcurvesandmathematics.Recognizingthatthegovernmentsattitudestoactsoftaxevasionwillaffectnotonlypeoplesbehaviorbutalsothecostoflevyingtaxes,hesawpossiblesolutionstotheproblemintheGameTheory.Iencouragedhimtopursuethisidea.HesaidhedidntknowmuchabouttheGameTheoryandproceededtoborrowsomeessaysbyNashfromme.Hethusleftmewithadeepimpression.

Studyingwithconscientiousness,Mr.Huioftencameupwithcreativeideas.Unlikesomeotherstudents,hestudiednottojustpasstheexamsbuttoreallyimprovehisknowledgeandexpertise.Hestandsoutamonghisfellowclassmateswithanunmistakablethirstforgenuineunderstandingofthecountryseconomicrealitiesandproblems.Thathaswonhimappreciationfromnotjustmebutmycolleaguesaswell.Buthediddowellinexamstoo.Inthefinalexamoflastsemester,hegotahighscoreof90formycourse.

Heoftentalkswithmeabouthisidealtobecomeaneconomist.Tohelpquenchhisthirstforknowledge,Ihavelentmanyofmyownbookstohimandtutoredhiminhisself-studyprogram.Hehasbeenmuchmoreengrossedindoingindependentresearchthanpreparingforexams,buthisgradesstillkeephimrankedamongthetop25%ofhisclass.Ithinkheisaveryintelligentyoungfellow.

Mr.HuihasagoodcommandoftheEnglishlanguage.Asheiswellacquaintedwithme,hehasoftenhelpedmeinmyownresearchbytranslatingsomeEnglishessaysthatIamtoobusytotranslate.Histranslationsareusuallyquitegood.HisoralEnglishisgoodtoo.ComparedwithotherChinesestudentswhomaybeapplyingtoyourprogram,IthinkMr.Huishouldbeconsideredmorefavorably.
