shypeople,havinglowself-respect,arelikelytobepassiveandeasilyinfluencedbyothers.theyneedreassurancethattheyaredoing"therightthing".shypeopleareverysensitivetocriticism:theyfeelitconfirmstheirinferiority.theyalsofinditdifficulttobepleasedbypraisebecausetheybelievetheyareunworthyofpraise.itisclearthat,whileself-awarenessisahealthyquality,over-doingitisharmful.
