wearingthevolunteeruniformandthevolunteeraccreditationcard,admiredbyothers,ifeltsneakyalittleproud.meanwhileialsofeltagreatresponsibilityfallingonmyshoulderknowingthatvolunteers’wordsandbehaviorscouldaffectforeignguests’impressiononchina.asiwasavolunteerforaccommodation,mypostwasinafour-starhotel.therewereplayersoffourteamsformchina,france,japan,czechoslovakialivingthere.allofthemareparticipantsofthebaseball.actually,mostofthetime,weservedasinterpretersforthoseworkinginthelobby.forexample,whentheplayerswantedtogooutforshopping,wewouldcallataxiforthemandtoldthetaxidriverwheretogo.while,thereissomethingworthwhiletobementionedthatmostofthevolunteersareenglishmajorsandmostoftheplayerscouldspeakenglishverywellexceptjapanesecontestants.comparedwithjapaneseplayers,wehadlessdifficultycommunicatingwithfrenchplayersandczech.irememberedthatonceimisunderstoodoneofthejapaneseplayers’requestsof“callup”for“cupof”,andifeltsoembarrassedthatievenwantedtocry.gradually,ilearnedtobemorecarefullywhentalkingtothenonenglishnativespeakers.duringtheeventlastingforlessthan15days,themostimpressiveexperiencewasthatitook3ofthejapaneseplayerstothebeijingzoo.asthezooisnotfarfromthehotel,wewalkedthere.ontheway,theyaskedmeaboutthebeggarsonthestreetintheirjust-so-soenglish,anditriedmybesttoexplain,andevenputtingmymouthintomymouth,indicatingthattheydidnothaveenoughtoeat.buttheystilldidnotgetme,whichwasreallyirritating.reflectingthat,iregretididnotlearnjapanesehardenough.thesedays,wehavebeenstudyingthenovelwuthingheightswrittenbyemilybronte,andoneofthecluesistheidentityofcatherine,whetherheathclifforedgarthatshereallylove.asahumanbeing,themostimportantthingistoidentifywhoweare,soshouldwestudents.livinginamixedsociety,havingadefiniteknowledgeofself-identitymattersalot.asacivilian,knowingwhatwereallyshoulddocanhaveagreatimpactonbothourselvesandthesocialcivilization.

tomakegoodpreparationfortheolympicgamestobeheldnextyear,atidalwavetolearnenglishisinfullwingnationally.whetheroldoryoung,beijingersarekeentoleaveanimpressivebeijing,ahigh-qualifiedchinafortheworld.irememberthatwheniwasavolunteerasateacherforoldseniorsinourcommunity,oneofmy“students”isover80years.shewasaengineeronarchitecture,andwhenshewasyoung,shestudiedrussianinsteadofenglishassecondlanguage,soafterretirement,shebegantolearnenglish,hopingthatshecouldcommunicatewithforeignerswhentheolympicgamesbeginsin2008.ineffect,herenthusiasmimpressedmealotandfromthenon,iexaminedmyselfagainandmakecertainofwhoiamandwhatismymeaningofmylife.
