Friendsplayanimportantroleinourlives,andalthoughwemaytakethefriendshipforgranted.Weoftendon'tclearlyunderstandhowwemakefriends.Whilewegetonwellwithanumberofpeople,weareusuallyfriendswithonlyafew--forexample,theaverageamongstudentsisabout6perperson.Inallthecasesoffriendlyrelationship,twopeoplelikeoneanotherandenjoybeingtogether,butbeyondthat,thedegreeofintimacybetweenthemandthereasonsfortheirsharedinterestvarylargely.Aswegettoknowpeoplewetakeintoaccountthingslikeage,race,economicconditions,socialpositionsandintelligence.Althoughthesefactorsareofprimeimportance,itismoredifficulttogetonwithpeoplewhenthereisamarkeddifferenceinageandbackground.
