TheveryfirstWorldSmileDaytookplaceinWorcester,MAonOctober1,1999.Whatacelebrationitwas!Stateandlocaldignitariesgatheredandreadproclamationsinsupportoftheday.AnotherproclamationrecognizingthedaywasreadontheflooroftheUnitedStatesCongressandisnowpartoftheCongressionalRecord,thereporteroftheofficialproceedingsoftheUSCongress.ThousandsofWorcesterschoolchildrencreatedWorldSmileDay®cardsthatwerethendeliveredtoareahospitalsandnursinghomes.Theeventbecamenationalandeveninternationalnews.

TheUSPostalservicecametoWorcesterthatdaytounveilitsnewSmileyFacestampdesign.And,thePostalServiceissuedaspecialcancellationjustforthatevent.EachyearsincethentheUSPShasissuedadifferentcancellationcommemoratingtheday.
